2 SAMUEL MOMENT – (06APR19) David went to get the ark that
had been at Abinadab’s home to bring to the City of David. Uzzah and Ahio, the
sons of Abinadab, went along with the ark to guide the new cart that it was on.
During the course of their travel, the oxen stumbled and Uzzah reached out to
grab hold of the ark. This angered the Lord and He struck Uzzah down. Uzzah was
not a Levitical priest. Therefore, he was not supposed to touch the Lord’s
things. This is why God killed him. He may have become comfortable with the ark
having been in his father’s home and felt that he was qualified to touch it in
order to keep it from falling, but this was not the case. God was very particular
with His things and no one was to touch what belonged to Him outside of the
Levitical priesthood. In modern times, too many people treat God with
disrespect and contempt. They do not honor God with their lives nor respect the
offices and servants of His. Even though God does not strike people dead like
He used to in Biblical times, the Apostle Paul speaks of people bringing a
curse upon themselves by taking the Lord’s supper being found unworthy to do
so. “So
then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy
manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord,” (1
Corinthians 11:27). We are to always examine ourselves to ensure that
we are right with God on a daily basis. We are also to respect the things of
God and reverence His name. When we bring honor to God, He will honor us, but
when we show contempt for the Lord, His face turns against us. Something to
ponder…
QUESTION OF THE DAY – (06APR19) Michal, Saul’s daughter and
David’s wife, was critical of David when he returned from bringing back the ark
of God. David danced before the Lord with all his might so much so that he had
danced out of his linen ephod. Michal, seeing that David dancing before the Lord
despised him. She came out to rebuke him and compared his praise to the Lord as
something vulgar being done before the slave girls. David, however, told her
that it was not her father who put him on the throne, but it was the Lord and
if he was to humiliate himself, then it would be for the Lord and not be
counted as such in front of the slave girls. The Bible mentions that Michal
never had any children during her lifetime. Scholars have posed the question as
to if Michal, not being able to have children, was a curse from God. Due to
this verse being placed right after this event could be quite plausible a
conclusion. It could have taken place in two ways. God could have made her
barren where she was never able to reproduce, or it could have been that David
never slept with her again due to her contempt for the Lord. Either way, having
a child during those days was considered to be an honor, but it was an honor
that she never received. Have you ever had to correct someone for rebuking you
for your religious beliefs? Have people misunderstood the stand that you take
for Christ and have accused you of going overboard? The Bible says that
spiritual things are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14). Therefore,
Christians can expect that not everyone will celebrate you when you do the Lord’s
work or refuse worldly ideologies. Nevertheless, we as Christians must stand
for the Lord regardless of the ridicule that we may receive. Something to
ponder…
