James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
The Apostle James tells us to be joyous when we go through trials. Now you may say, "How am I supposed to be joyful when I am going through difficult times?" Well, it is not easy to be joyful when you are being tested. Tests can come all various ways such as illness, lost of employment, failure of a relationship, death, and more. However, when we are going through various trials, we know that in order to persevere, we must have faith to know that God will carry us through.
It is easy to say that you will have faith when you are not going through any testing. But rest assure that you can only know if you have faith when you are required to use it. For example, a doctor can learn all the book knowledge required to perform a heart transplant. However, he will not know if what he learned is proficient until he is actually tested by performing the surgery.
It's the same way with God. He allows us to go through various tests not to harm us, but to make us fit for the kingdom. Not only are we being tested to see if we pass, but we are also being evaluated as to our attitude during the test. This is why the Apostle James tells us to be joyful during trials. We know that because God is our Father and the Administrator over all exams, He will not allow us to fail. Once we have passed, we will have proven ourselves worthy in the eyes of God for a great reward.
