Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God’s
mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this
is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the
pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind….(NIV)
One day, I was watching my TV when
the “gospel” artist, Johnny Mo was singing his song, “Nothing Wrong” which was
taken from the R Kelly’s Bump and Grind soundtrack. For a moment, I had to make
a double-take to see if I was actually hearing right. Even though he had
changed the words to say “Jesus” plenty of times, I didn’t feel quite spiritual
at that point. The only thing that resonated in my mind was, “I don’t see
nothing wrong with a little bump and grind.” Yes, R Kelly’s ORIGINAL lyrics. It took me back to the days when I was at the
club and getting my groove on in an “ungodly” way.
What I didn’t quite understand was
of all the songs that an artist could use, why choose that one with a known
sexual connotation to it? Then I began to wonder, did God really inspire him to
write a song using the same beats that promoted fornication and possibly made
plenty of out-of-wedlock babies to it? Would God use a song that would take
your mind to the bedroom before it takes your mind to Him? Would God use a song
that would make me want to jump on a man, as a single Christian woman,
intimately because it took my mind there? Would God use a song where the world’s
first instants and thoughts would be that of a secular artist? It makes you
wonder? Romans 14:16 Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of
as evil. (NIV)
He is just one of many artists who
have made or copied music so close to the secular side that you would have a
hard time knowing if it were gospel or demonic. Now some may say, there is no
particular tone that God cannot use, and of course, this is true. However, are
some Christian artists STARVING to be accepted by both sides to the point that
they will WATER DOWN gospel music just so it can be played on secular stations?
I believe that this is happening in today’s time. There is a demand for money
even in the world of Gospel and people are doing what it takes to get it even
if they are selling their souls in the process.
2 Corinthians 11:14-15 And no wonder, for Satan himself
masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants
masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions
deserve.
It is easy to talk about the
secular artists, but at least you know where they stand. Some of the so-called
Christian artists are no better. As a matter of fact, I would dare to say that
they are worse because they are supposed to be followers of Christ. Therefore,
they are held to a higher standard according to the word of God. Unfortunately,
they are being played like a fiddle by the devil himself in the name of Jesus.
Yes, the devil is a mastermind and he will do whatever it takes to suck in
Christians even if it is through their own music.
The devil is crafty and just as he
mixed truth with error when he tempted Eve, he is doing the same thing today.
He is using some gospel music to imitate the secular music in an attempt to get
Christians caught up. He doesn’t mind the artists throwing in a “little Jesus
here” and a “little Jesus there” because after all, he is a believer too. He
just doesn’t want anyone to fully belong to God and make a stand for Christ in
a total act of submission. Therefore, if he can have artists so desperate in an
attempt for fame, fortune, and success, he will use and do whatever he has too,
even if that means allowing God’s name to be mentioned.
Some of the Gospel hip hop, rock,
and other artists are truly working to win souls to Christ, so this is not an
attempt to single anyone out. Only God can judge and say who truly is trying to
be devoted towards His cause. However, it is somewhat obvious in many ways that
some gospel artists are more secular than Christian in their mannerism. They
want to look like the world, talk like the world, and imitate the world, while
still holding the title “Gospel” in front of the word artist. However, the
Bible says, “By their fruit, you will recognize them…” Matthew 7:15. (NIV) If you can barely distinguish the worldly
artist from the secular…there may be a problem.
If you are singing about the
Illuminati as in the instance of Christian Rap Artist, Toby Mac, you may not
want to consider yourself a “Christian” artist. Revelation 3:15-16 I know you deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish
you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot not
cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. (NIV) It is like
pouring Kool-Aid into a milk carton and calling it milk. Milk doesn’t just appear because of what’s
inside…you have to pour the actual substance. So just because someone has the
title “Christian” artist doesn’t make him/her such. The Gospel is being watered down from the
pulpit to the congregation. Many pastors are more like pimps than they are
leaders. Some choir directors have more sugar in their drink than most women.
Some Christian musicians have more groupies than ball players. And some Christian
artists show more skin and fitted clothing than some female escorts.
Being a Christian should mean
something. Being a Christian artist should place you in a different category than
the mainstream. Telling the world about Jesus should be our primary focus. If
the world cannot tell us apart…something is wrong. The hypocrisy needs to stop
and it needs to stop NOW! Can you imagine Jesus with a big chain around his
neck talking about, “What’s up Big Pappa” speaking to the heavenly Father? I’m
just saying…
