What is
Demonic Possession?
According to the Holman Bible Dictionary it is—The control of
an individual’s personality so that actions are influenced by an evil demonic
spirit.
What are
some causes AND possible ways to have Demon Possession?

Disobedience to God—1 Samuel 15:17, 22-23 Samuel
said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the
head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. And he
sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people,
the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ Why did
you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the
eyes of the Lord?” “…Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as
much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is
better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and
arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the

Those demon-possessed
in the Bible often had other ailments as well.
Matthew 9:32-33 While they were going out, a man who was
demon-possessed the man who had been mute

Matthew 12:22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus

Matthew 8:28-34 When he arrived at the other side in the region of
the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were
so violent that no one
could pass that way. “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted.
“Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” Some distance
from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. The demons begged Jesus, “If you
drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the
whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.
Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this,
including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. Then the whole town
went out to meet Jesus. And when they way him, they pleaded with him to leave

Mark 5:2-5 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure
spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one
could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained
hand and foot, but he tore the
chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough
to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself

Mark 1:23-28 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed
by an impure spirit cried out, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out
of him with a shriek. The people were all so amazed that they asked each

Casting Out Demons
In order
for a demon to leave, you must Believe
Mark 9:17-25 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you
my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it
seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his
teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but
they could not.” “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus
Replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long
shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.” So they brought him. When
the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell
to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy’s
father, “How long has he been like this?” “From
childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire, or water to kill
him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” “ ‘If you can’ ?” said Jesus. “Everything
is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father
exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that a
crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” The
spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much
like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and
lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. After Jesus had gone indoors, his
disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.” (NIV)
To cast a
demon out, you must be given authority
Matthew 10:1,8 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave
them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and
sickness. (8) Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse
those who have leprosy, drive our demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
(NIV)
To cast a
demon out, you must be Prayed Up and Well with God
Acts 19:13-17 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits
tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed.
They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to
come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day
the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who
are you? Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered
them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and
bleeding. When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they
were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high
honor. (NIV)
Acts 16:16-24 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we
were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future.
She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She
followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most
High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” She kept this up for many
days. Finally Paul because so annoyed that he turned around and said to the
spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that
moment the spirit left her. When her owners realized that their hope of making
money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the
marketplace to face the authorities. They brought them before the magistrates
and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar by
advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice. The crowd
joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them
to be stripped and beaten with rods. After they had been severely flogged, they
were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.
When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their
feet in the stocks. (NIV)
Satan
cannot drive himself out
Matthew 12:24-28 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is
only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”
Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every
kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household
divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided
against himself. How can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by
Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.
But if is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God
has come upon you.” (NIV)
The Evil
Spirit will try to Return with More Enforcement
Luke 11:24-26 “When an impure spirit comes
out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.
Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, if finds
the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other
spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final
condition of that person is worse than the first.” (NIV)
