Satan the Prince of Darkness
John 12:31 Now is
the time for judgment on this world; not the prince of this world will be
driven out. (NIV)
The
time had come for Lucifer to make his desperate attempt to overthrow God, and
to set himself up as the god of the heavens, similar to the prophetic word later
given to Ezekiel concerning the King of Tyre. Ezekiel 28:2 “Son of man,
say to the ruler of Tyre, “In the pride of your heart you say, ‘I am a god; I
sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas.” But you are a mere mortal
and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god. (NIV) Lucifer
knew that he needed some angels to come on his side, so that he would
immediately have some followers loyal to him. Those who did not agree to come
over would possibly had been dealt a heavy hand, and one can only imagine what
he would have tried to do to God if he had been able to succeed.
Therefore,
he convinced a third of the angels that it would be to their best interest to team
up with him because in his eyes, God’s way wasn’t the best way. Lucifer thought
that he was equal to God and that he shouldn’t have to submit to the Godhead. One
can possibly imagine the conversation that took place as some of the angels
pleaded with Lucifer not to take this course of action, while others listened
intently as the thought of self-governance without regulation crossed their minds.
A third of the angels listened to Lucifer’s lies and then there was war in Heaven.
Revelation
12:7-9 (7)Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels
fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. (8)But
he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. (9)The
great dragon was hurled down – that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan,
who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels
with him. (NIV)
The
archangel, Michael, and his angels had to go to battle against Lucifer and his
angels. The war was definitely a very unique one with no one being able to die
at that time. The fight, however, was to determine who would stay and who would
leave. Lucifer and his angels were on the losing end and were kicked out of
Heaven never to be returned again. At that pivotal moment, Lucifer was no
longer seen as the morning star, but his name became associated with evil. He
was and still is known as Satan, devil, dragon, deceiver, and serpent – just to
name a few. John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to
carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not
holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his
native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (NIV)
