When it comes to wisdom, I love how King Solomon requested the Creator of the universe to give him the wisdom needed to lead His people. The Bible says: “ So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (1 Kings 3:9). Solomon recognized his earthly limitations and did not think more of himself than he was. He knew that it would take more than book knowledge and the mere wisdom of man to lead in accordance with the will of God. Wisdom was even needed to understand His need for more wisdom to rule over God's people. Wherefore, God granted his request, and as we know, he was credited with being the wisest man on the face of the earth, apart from our Lord and Savior, Jesus, with whom there is no equal.
Although there is an absolute need for academic instruction, God gave the young king divine wisdom that covered more than he could have ever learned in a lifetime of studies. While many people have considered themselves as being wise throughout the centuries, could any of them surpass the wisdom of Solomon? No! Religious scholar H.B. Smith stated that God’s wisdom yields the greatest outcome using the most proficient method.
The ancient Near East and some of today’s nations often parallel the Bible regarding their understanding of wisdom. Yet, they all fall short in comparison to the Lord’s wisdom because they did and still do not honor Him. The Bible says: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10). And so, without God, there can only be knowledge, but one needs wisdom to properly apply the knowledge obtained. Therefore, let’s ensure we seek the Lord for wisdom in all we do, for there are many educated idiots, but God’s wisdom plus education is priceless.
