The Book of Revelation and Your Mental Health
Fear – (immediate) a primary, powerful emotion triggered by the perception of danger, pain, or threat. It is a natural survival mechanism that triggers physiological changes—such as an adrenaline rush—preparing the body to confront or flee the hazard (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). The Bible says, “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades” (Revelation 1:17-18).
Anxiety – (future) Anxiety is your body's natural response to stress, characterized by feelings of fear or apprehension about what's to come. Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like a rapid heartbeat. It is the body's natural response to perceived danger or stress, often triggering a "fight-or-flight" reaction to help you react to potential threats. The Bible says, “The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John” (Revelation 1:1).
Grief – the profound emotional and physical anguish that follows a significant loss. While typically associated with the death of a loved one or pet, it can also stem from any life-altering change, such as a breakup, job loss, or chronic illness. The Bible says, “The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn and cry out: ‘Woe! Woe to you, great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls! In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’” (Revelation 18:15-17).
Depression -- a serious mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness, emptiness, and a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It negatively affects how you feel, think, and act, and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. The Bible says, “When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city?’ They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out: ‘Woe! Woe to you, great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth! In one hour, she has been brought to ruin!’ ” (Revelation 18:18-19).
Worry -- is a state of mental distress, unease, or anxiety caused by the anticipation of potential problems, dangers, or unpleasant events. Anger – a basic human emotion characterized by intense displeasure, antagonism, or hostility toward a perceived threat, mistreatment, or injustice. It is a natural "fight-or-flight" response that prepares the body for action by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and adrenaline. The Bible says, “The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your people who revere your name, both great and small—and for destroying those who destroy the earth” (Revelation 11:18).
Calm -- a state of peace, stillness, and freedom from agitation, excitement, or disturbance. It can function as an adjective (e.g., a "calm" sea), a noun (finding "calm" in a busy day), or a verb to soothe or relax. Happy – describes an emotional state of joy, contentment, and satisfaction. —a state encompassing frequent positive emotions (like joy and contentment) and a cognitive evaluation that your life is meaningful and satisfying The Bible says, “Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear” (Revelation 19:7-8).
Peace -- a state of harmony characterized by the absence of hostility, violence, or conflict. The Bible says, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4).
Joy -- a deep, abiding emotion of intense delight or happiness, often evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune. Unlike fleeting momentary happiness, joy is typically described as an ongoing state of inner contentment and satisfaction.
