Small Part…Huge Impact

James 3:3-5 (3)When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. (4)Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. (5)Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. (NIV)

There were two students in a math class being taught by a new teacher name by Mr. Edwards. Both students were having trouble in math. Mr. Edwards, being the concerned teacher that he was, had a meeting with the boys’ families in order to offer assistance to them. After speaking with both families individually, they agreed to allow the students to get help from a couple of tutors, which the school had hired, to help students struggling in various subjects.
One of the boys did very well and at the end of the semester had raised his math grades from making D’s to B’s. The other boy’s grades continued to plummet and even though the tutor tried his best to help, the boy could not seem to bring his math grades up. The teacher had a talk with both students at the end of the semester in order to let them know their progress. The one boy was happy to know that he had raised his grades up and told Mr. Edwards that he was getting great support from both the tutor and his family. However, the other boy, who did not fair so well, told his teacher that his family thought that he was dumb and often told him as much. Mr. Edwards looked surprised to hear what the boy had said, but he understood why the boy was failing. It was due to him being told by his family that he couldn’t do it instead of being told that he could.

The Apostle James lets us know that the tongue, even though small, has great power. It can either be used for good, or it can be a tool for evil. The words that come from a person’s mouth can help lift someone up to new heights or destroy them by bringing them down and making them feel unlovable. Proverbs 12:18 The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. (NIV) How many times have you been encouraged by someone who offered you a few words of care? This is why greeting’s cards do so well in stores. People love to hear encouraging words rather they are sick, dying, in despair, or lonely. A good word can make for a cheerful heart. Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. (NIV)

As men of God, it is important to be the mouth of encouragement in the home, church and beyond. God is looking for men who will take their rightful positions for His kingdom. The apostles were all chosen men of God to carry out his message. They used their voices for good and never evil. Why not follow their example? Allow God to use you in a mighty way by being the mouthpiece that He has called you to be.
