Trust in His Mighty Power

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. (NIV)

Deborah, a judge and prophetess, had given Barak, an Israelite warrior, the message of the Lord that He would give him the victory over the Israelites’ enemies who had taken them into captivity. However, Barak did not trust in God enough to know that what God said was true alone. Therefore, he wanted the security of knowing that Deborah would be alongside him in battle. Due to his lack of faith, Deborah agreed to his terms, but told him that the honor given for the win would not go to him, but to a woman.

The Israelites went to battle and God granted them victory over their enemies, but the commander of Canaan’s army, Sisera, ran away on foot. He went to the tent of a woman named Jael who was married to a man named Heber. She invited him in with a warm welcome and therefore, he trusted that he would be safe there. After all, no one would think that he would be inside the tent of a married woman. Her husband was friendly with the king with whom Sisera was associated with as well. He asked her for a drink of water, but she gave him some milk instead and covered him up. Due to him being exhausted after the day’s events, he went to sleep.

While Sisera was asleep, Jael took a tent peg and hammered it into his skull. After which, Barak finally made his way to finding Sisera, only to find out that a woman had beat him to the task of killing Sisera as Deborah had prophesied, according to the word given from the Lord. We can be sure that Barak learned a great lesson on that day. You can always trust in the mighty power of God and what He says in His word will never fall on rocky soil. Isaiah 55:10-11 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and so not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth; It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (NIV)

There are times in life when we may doubt the promises that God has given us. Days, months and even years may pass as we wait for the Lord to fulfill what He has promised. During the time of waiting, it is easy to get impatient and want to take matters into our own hands. However, the Bible lets us know that we are to wait upon the Lord and put our trust completely in Him because He will never fail us. Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (KJV)

The Apostle Paul lets us know to be strong, or in other words, confident in God’s mighty power. This is all a part of being a great warrior in God. He is our Commanding Officer and as with any military, you have to obey the commanding officer regardless of if you doubt his strategy. The commanding officer can see things that you cannot and therefore, it is the same way with God. God is in control of our lives and will never lead us wrong. We can always trust in His might and in His word that it will never return void. He will always get the victory in the end.
